i've noticed that most bands or people playing guitar nowadays always have their guitar strap so low they are always slouching. but i find i can play WAY better and have more control when its higher up. i understand it doesn't look "cool." But. i just have a lot more control.

any thaughts?

the wayx you feel comfortable with it is the right way. i personally have my guitar pretty high up when i play, which does look a bit rediculous at times, but i dont care. just look at john myung....

I like a happy medium. Comfortable but not snug.

Where ever it feels good at is the right place for it to be. If you feel comfortable with a 60" strap and having the guitar hang to your knees then there you are...:)
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

Basically, here's my method:
• Adjust the strap so that the guitar touches the ground when I'm standing straight up

  • Raise it 3/4"

  • Done

  •
... and that's all I have to say about that.

yeah i used to get a boot lace and extend my guitar strap way down . look at "guitarists" like tim armstrong {rancid} there is NO way he can play that thing ! its purely a prop , however lower guitars do look cooler , i always set the length of my strap long enough that i can tremmelo pick the high e without too much strain :D

haha. bottom line is the lower it is the crappier you play in my opinion. look at a classic guitar player and how close his fretboard is to his face. that's proper posture and any deviation from it will result in injury given any serious practice. But usually I find the lower the guitar the less serious the guitarist is about playing anything decent.

Too low is not cool looking , it's nu-metal kinda look ... Look at Slash or Jimi Page , now that's cool looking.

Actually, to tell you the truth, that's probably the two coolest-looking guitarists there are, with their LPs. Also, Joe Perry - a couple former bandmates used to joke that Joe Perry probably spent hours in front of the mirror a day practicing looking cool with a guitar.

I think that a guitar strap shouldn't make your guitar any farther away from your head than you sitting down with the guitar sitting on your knee or in your lap. The reason I like the guitar this high is that I play a lot of Jazz, and I often need that extra technical facility for those weird rythym chords.

Yeah , now that he has already been looking cool for few decades , he should consider spending more time practicing the guitar. :p

I think guitarists with the guitar at the ground, and the guy is bending all the way over looks quite retarded. Who cares what you look like, just put the frigin strap where you want.

That's what I think too, but some styles are prone to put image over technique when playing live. I had a guys album, which was pretty decent technically, and I went to see him play. He played with his guitar so low I thought it'd be impossible for him to do anything but he just played a watered down version of his tunes so he could jump around and whatnot and for the solos he put his foot up on a monitor and played with his guitar on his knee. I thought he was freaken stupid, but there's an example of how rediculous this whole strap issue can get.

Do these people who play with their guitars so low live, practice with them that low? Gotta suck.

I can't play very well on guitars that are strapped low, I keep mine relatively high up. But that's just me.
