what do you mean by those little nasty things. The one with springs?
The ones I use are sold under the name of Gripmaster. They consist of two bars joined by springs, and a row of spring-loaded buttons. They have a rubber cap one one bar to allow it to fit comfortably against the base of your thumb and the palm of your fretting hand. There are three springs between this part and the middle bar. Above the middle bar are four buttons, each with it's own spring. One for each finger. You work out by pinching th device between your thumb and fingers.

I usually remove the rubber cap and push against the bar with the ball of my thumb, just as I push against the back of the guitar neck. When you first start, it's amazing how much strength it takes to compress the spring with your pinky finger! I recommend starting with the lightest one, even if you're not recovering from an injury. These gizmos are helpful in developing your ability to move your fingers strongly and independantly. As with any skill, it's very important to get it right before moving on to the next (harder) step.

There is no substitute for practice on an actual guitar, but working with these 'nasty lil thangs' can do a lot to help you develop the finger strength and co-ordination that you need for good technique.

Where can I get one of those nasty little things?
Don't tell me my local music shop, if they had them I'd know.

If I would practise on a grip then the muscles that i would be working on is the ones for bending down. how about for the muscles for bending upward? I usually bent upward

i left a post before telling people in detail the equipment & set up SRV used to get his sound well obviously that is the expensive & complicated route. so the other day when browsing the net i found the digitech bad monkey pedal on the net with some audio sample & it gives a nice texas blues sound not dissimilar to SRV, & when you listen to each sample it shows you the settings they had it on, so you could buy one of those or set up your pedal to similar settings as i did, this is how i set up my multi-fx.

so i got my korg AX1500G picked a tube OD amp model, and set it up as so:

level - 6
bass - 6
trebble - 10
gain - 6
middle - i played around with it till i got the right sound i think its some wher about 6-7

i then picked a 4x10 tweed cabinet (open back 4x12" speakers) i thought it sounded better than the 1x12 tweed even though he used a 1x12 speaker more ofter than a 4x10, i just played around with the settings of the cab till it sounded about right then added a touch of reverb & it all made for a great texas blues tone quite similar to SRV i tried it out by playing the intro to pride & joy

for the clean channel i just bypassed the amp modelling & left the cab & reverb settings as they were and it sounded great when playing Lenny.

my advice is to get a good texas blues tone then make fine adjustments till you get a sound like his.

ive recorded about 1 minute's worth of Lenny using my clean tone so here's a link check it out SRV (Clean Tone Demo) - Lenny please dont judge my playing as im not SRV so obviously i cannot play like him & i havent been playing long

ill record a section of another of SRV's tracks on the overdrive channel & upload that also as soon as i can

no! half way!

At first I didnt practise on single fingers, then divided it to 2 fingers and finally one. After a 3 day practising with my pinkie i was able to move it half way down. of course with a lot of muscles aches...

Tune down a half step when playing SRV. I use a Strat, strung with 11s going through a tube screamer and a fender twin. It's dead on with some reverb.

IMO

To sound like SRV, you need to life his life with all the influences he had. You need to listen to the same music he did, and to be able to interpret it the way that he did. SRV could pick up any guitar and sound like SRV, so that should tell you something about the equipment. His sound was 10% equipment, and 90% him.
