Personaly, the first time I heard of Paul Gilbert, I though he WAS a bluegrass player

Begs the question can shredders play any other style than shred music and I say... maybe. Classical for sure. Hell, I'm a shredder and a jazz bassist. I don't have the chops of one Paul Gilbert mind you but it's for sure possible to have 7 styles flowing through your brain. Jazz rock fusion man. Who are some of those guys, Howe, Kotzen. I forget.

well i am wondering if players like paul gilbert or zakk wylde or even yngwie that doesnt ever play it could play it. I am thinking that if they got together with some really complicated bluesgrass or jazz players that they would not really fit in to well, but they might surprise me.

Zakk would easily fit in...Yes he can shred but he can play some pretty mean chicken picking stuff and hes into that country sorta stuff...just listen to the intro of Mamma im coming home...Country istn really the Yngmisters thing

Paul Gilbert is a well-rounded musician, and he obviously has a well-polished technique, so I'm sure he could play almost anything thats thrown at him. Of course he might not do it as well as a Jazzer or a Bluegrasser would, but I'm sure he could cop the style pretty good.

John 5 (formerly?) of Marilyn Manson, is very acccomplished in both shredding first, and more recently bluegrass. They are two very different styles of music, its like a mambo player learning death metal, takes alot of work.

I know technecally paul gilbert could play anything. But i wonder if paul gilbert or someone like zakk wylde (who does get into some chikin pickin stuff) could play music that is musically complicated rather than technically complicated. Of all of their music i have heard none of it is really musically complicated like jazz

I read an article on Paul Gilbert in an '01 issue of Guitar Player mag and he said that when he started he wanted to play real bluesy but started learning sweeps and such and it totally destroyed any ability he had for blues...
I think that people who start off or are proficient in a particular style tend to bring that with them to the next style they play or learn so you have the "fusion" of the two.

That's exactly what I'm in the process of doing.
Except it gets so discouraging because metal is such a monotonous style.

LOL!!! I know what you mean, same basic song structure and rythms... AC/DC comes to mind with that stuff... great band but the same basic setup for ALL their songs...
I think that once you get a firm grasp on a particular style and it comes to you without thinking about it is when you can start to improvise on that style and take all the monotony out of it.... I try to do the same thing but I usually wind up back at my basic blues teaching mostly because I'm comfortable with those structures...(the fact that it's easy helps a little too )
