I read an article on Paul Gilbert in an '01 issue of Guitar Player mag and he said that when he started he wanted to play real bluesy but started learning sweeps and such and it totally destroyed any ability he had for blues...

I think that people who start off or are proficient in a particular style tend to bring that with them to the next style they play or learn so you have the "fusion" of the two.
