lead guitar
hey ive been playing guitar for like two years now and im pretty good, but ive been confused lately about different scales. i know that if you want to solo in a song that is in the key of Em then you play the Em pentatonic scale. but ive seen sites on the internet where they tell you you can play the E pentatonic scale, and sometimes like the Am scale and stuff like that. im confused to what scales you can play in what keys. please help.

Relative keys and keys that use most of the same notes in another scale you can use.
For example you could use Em or Am to solo in Em. Gives you different sounds. Look at modes for alot of different scales.

If you're playing in E phrygian (which is a minor scale) then yes, you could play an A natural minor scale.

Use your ears! All of that scales stuff is a great starting point, but when it comes down to it, your ears are your leaders. They will tell you what sounds good. You should also learn chord scales, and modes if you really want to understand it all. Just about half of the hosts here have lessons on the modes, so they aren't that hard to find.

ok this is where knowing the modes comes in really handy
The chord Em fits in lots of keys, Em Am Bm
so u could play Em Am and Bm pentantonics and it would work
think of it like this if your given a minor chord to jam over say Cminor you can play that position pentatonic, perfect 4th pentatonic (up 5 frets), and perfect 5th pentatonic (up 7 frets)
all of these positions will be in key, the second two will sound a little different but theres nothing wrong with that
in a jazzy/ bluesy context you can play the pent box up a minor 3rd (3 frets) thats a cool sound
