Do you play an acoustic, solid body, or hollow body electric?
For a hollow body you might try flatwound or roundwound strings, for an acoustic I don't know since I haven't had that problem in years, for an electric turn the gain down.
..and stuff.

i play acoustic. maybe i'm sliding it the wrong way? do you keep your fingers pressed onto the strings as you slide? that's what i do... maybe it has something to do with string age, altho i doubt it?

Most people squeak when sliding on an acoustic. Personally, I think it sounds cool. It also proves that you're playing a real acoustic, for what that's worth.
I don't get that much squeaking these days, as I use Elixir strings which have a polyweb coating on them.

... and that's all I have to say about that.

yes i do think the squeaking makes the song sounds 'authentic.' but it does get annoying after a while :p
well my strings are a lil old, so that could well be the reason of course

even the biggest classical players thend to squeak when sliding up and down the wound strings. there is hardly a way to avoid it, because when you lift your fretting hand completely off the fretboard when changing chords, your playing will be very inefficient and uneconomic and it will become hard to master quick and difficult chord changes fluently. live with it - thats acoustic guitar ;)

It is common practice (for all I know) when recording an acoustic guitar to use two mikes, one above the hole, and the other oneabove the neck, picking up the scratching. I find recording this way gives more atmospheric qualities to the music. However if you use same (nylon) strings for a longer while they die a little bit inside, so there's less noise, but also less colour, which may yet produce an interesting sound.
