Well, having tried it on my RP200, I'd say it's an effect that functions a bit as an auto-wah, but its effect level varies depending on the dynamics of the note played (the pick attack). I'm not too familiar with it othewise, however.

Did you ever see the second Cheech & Chong film, well the music behind the bit where they are wandering round Amsterdam looking for something to eat.... that is an envelope filter !

It's a pretty funky sound when used correctly..sort of like a mix between a wah-wah and a talk box. Jerry Garcia used one a lot in the later days (think "shakedown street").
