Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
What do you think of black/death metal?
# 1
I think some of it is a load of crap but some is really good. I prefer more technical death metal than just the primitive bands that try and be more heavy than any other band. I like the band "death". I think they are one of the best death metal bands ever. Also Children of bodom are amazing ... i'm guessing they would be under melodic death metal or something like that. Not really sure about black metal though.
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

I luv black metal,
i dont listen to everything im pretty picky...black metal im more familiar with, then death..ive only heard some 'death'
and i like the early bands like bathory mayhem. [most bands that were involved in that black circle stuff] then theres also the ambience of black metal / epic metal with acts like burzum.
Any band whatever style thats not doing enough to push boundaries or sound original wont be considered anyway, but yea i guess like in any genre ull find ur crap and ur excellence.
i just cant get enough of the sawing sounds, screeching vocals or grunts, and that blasting bass drum.

As in all types of music some it sucks, and some of it is good. I think in death metal, most of it sucks.

So you've actually heard most of it? That's quite impressive, I love that kind of music and even I don't dare making a statement like that... ;)
Anyway, yeah, there's some death metal bands that I really love, but I've never been into black metal.
I think the names black metal, and particularly death metal are very poorly chosen since they put off a lot of people before they even hear one note of music...

I've never liked any music (which has vocals) that just talks or screams the lyrics......
and thats most of what I've come by with this genre.....
I'm also not big on guitars dropped down to like a b or c.....
It gets all murky and you don't really hear the "music" of it

Sorry I forgot to put *note sarcasm* at the bottom. I'm not the only person who makes broad generalizations, so I don't feel bad.

There's already a catergory similar to that. It's called Nu-Metal. There is only a certain amount of dreadlocks, piercings and heavily down-tuned fingerchords you can see and hear before knocking out the next kid who thinks they are 'fully sick and totally hardcore' because they listen to Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park.
Back to death/black metal.
A few to stay away from:
Cannibal Corpse - A mediocre death metal band, best known as the metal band in Ace Ventura. I got a double album CD and the only noticable change between songs were the different production quality of the seperate albums.
Anal C*nt - A ridiculous band that makes me shudder when ever I hear them. Just plain sh*t.
Six Feet Under - Boring and unoriginal.
Give these a listen:
Blood Duster - (perhaps best described as porn groove death metal) Funny, great to jam to and sutprisingly catchy.
Dark Tranquilty
Opeth - Simply brilliant
The Berzerker - Extremely fast. Sounds like it could give people seizures. The only metal band to have incorperated a cowbell well (in the song Massacre). Probably not for everyone.

I don't really understand the categorisations: what's the difference between death and black metal? Is it just that lyrically black metal is really sick and trys to offend people? Does the vocal style have anything to do with it? I generally don't like growling, I prefer people who can sing.
As for bands; well, meshuggah are technically excellent with a brilliant guitar player. Not really into them but might end up that way.
I heard some Opeth for the first time last night and was very impressed with their sense of melody, variety of dynamics, tightness of execution and variety of scale use. I would love to hear more.
I have heard a little Morbid Angel. They have an excellent guitar sound with a top soloist.
What would you guys recommend for musicality and technical competence by these or other similar bands?

If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

Man, I'd love to have a goth/metal club anywhere near where I live. All that women in pvc n latex n bondage stuff. Hell yeah. Some good tracks would be well appreciated too.

Anyone want to hear my cover of The Berzerker's Massacre? It's the first song I recorded that wasn't live, about 6-7 months ago, and was done late one night so the production quality isn't great. I tuned my guitar down so it's a bit muddy and didn't get around to putting in the vocals.
I should really record it again, seeing that I've now got a 7 string, and put in vocals that don't drown out the guitar and sound kind of sloppy, like the original.

I'd have to say that all death metal is primitive. It's always these neanderthal rockers with hair down to their feet, gutteral shouting that is more reminiscent of pushing out a big turd rather than singing, and absolutely no originality with heavy riffing that all sounds the same.
Moreover, my main concern with this type of music (and others as well) is that 99.9% of it is based on image and little talent. Whatever happened to just good ole' plain metal (i.e. early Metallica)? These black/death metal bands would rather spend their time practicing evil looks in front of a mirror than sitting down and creating good music. I suppose it's sort of an oxymoron, though, since there couldn't possibly be good death metal when idiots like Rob Zombie (I know he's not death metal) come along and ruin every song with that so-called 'evil' shouting or whatever you want to call it. Bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and so forth illustrate my point. I cannot support this garbage.
