picking
I keep hearing about three styles of picking....alternate, legatto and economy.....What are legatto and economy picking? I probably already do it but just don't know what to call it
# 1
Legatto is simply when you don't pick every note. It's a combination of hammer-ons/pull-offs and tends to sound smoother than constant alternate picking. Economy picking, on the other hand, is harder to explain. Economy picking can be in patterns of strokes (ie. downstroke, downstroke, upstroke, etc). It's much easier to explain by actually watching a guitarist do it.

Alternate picking is straight up, down, up, down, no matter where you are or even if you change strings.
Economy is like this for example:
e|-------------------------------
B|-------------------------------
G|-------------------------------
D|-------------------------------
A|-------------------2---3---5---
E|-0--1----3---5-----------------
You would start the 0 (open E) with an upstroke, the 1 (F) with a down stroke, the 3 (G) with an upstroke, the 5 (A) with a downstroke, but then, you would continue a downstroke on the next string (2), not an upstroke like alternate picking. Most guitarist use a sweeping type motion going to the next string.
finger_cruncher is dead on with legato.

Sometimes I hit notes only dogs can hear.

Hybrid picking is a technique in which you use both your fingers and a pick. Like picking some notes on one string and fingerpicking notes on another string at the same time.
Check out http://www.kronosonic.com and click under Ego, he has a whole article on a type of hybrid picking.

Are there any other types of picking?
Yes, there is nose picking. This is a technique where you insert the tip of your finger inside of your nose and gently scrape at the epilthelial cells to dislodge unwanted mucus.

I call economy picking, slurring. Just thought I'd share that. Very witty finger_cruncher, I'd say that was a knee slapper and a half.

I actually thought it was funny. In fact, I actually laughed.

I bet you did. I just saw it coming, because I'm just about on that maturity level. Hehehe picking your nose *giggles like a little school girl*. Ok I'm done...

Whoa, for a second I thought you were referring to nose picking...
... and that's all I have to say about that.
