OK, QUESTION !!!!!!! Has anyone put electric strings on their acoustic guitar? I got a tip from someone to do this and it sounds great on their guitar...but Im wondering if they are stiffer than acoustic strings and may tear my bridge?? Any thoughts? - Tara
Dont worry...
You guys are nutty. But dont worry about making me feel singled out. I joined this site cause even without posting or chatting..it has been very helpful to me in learning new techniques and scales. Im not a seasoned musician but it IS what I strive to be. And mostly..I can play for hours and forget about the world. Better than any drug any doctor has ever given me. So play on! BTW Thank you PonyOne for picking my girlhood up from the dark ages ;-) But they havent scared me away..I can take it, and no offense taken. So far I feel pretty welcomed. ALso...thank you Leedogg for being very helpful in the guitartricks chatroom.

Yeah, actually, I was crazy enough to do this to my friend's cheap Washburn that he kept forgetting at my house (I still have it, 4 years later...)
It sounds OK, feels really slinky. It might sound neat to use it with a mike for lead over another acoustic. The tone is pretty thin, though, and there's not too much volume.
It was fun to try, but then I also learned why certain things are a certain way.
BTW, I also learned on that same acoustic that removing frets is a job best left to the pros. :(

... and that's all I have to say about that.

There's a bunch of good reasons why acoustic guitar strings are usually bronze wound, and why a set that has a .012" high E is called 'light'. :)
BTW: Don't mind Jolly McWhassname - he can't count either. There are at least four female players who post on this forum.

I noticed the volume is a bit low...but..what I was hoping..in a well insulated room such as one Ive put together..the low volume may record better. Its all theory and Im a total beginner. Mostly Im scared Ill ruin the integrity of my bridge on my Fender acoustic. Its 23 yrs old and in great condition. Id hate to be the loser to bust it up cause I got a wild hair up my butt. Hehe..:)

No worries on that score. You may find that the action is a bit lower due to reduced string tension on the neck. If you don't have fret-buzz because of that, then enjoy!

Hey, I'm getting "hooked on numbers" in just a few weeks, so that should aid in my quest to no longer need to count on my fingers. And besides, who's gonna mind me in the first place? I'm an idiot!

Anyhoo, to post something useful and on-subject, do you have a job? Do you have an upcoming birthday? Is there any possible way you could just buy an electric and not have to worry about this dilemma at all? Seriously, electrics are (IMO) much more fun to play on than acoustics. I can't stand any acoustic that doesn't have nylon strings because the steel string acoustics drive me out of my mind with the thickness of their strings. Electrics play faster, cooler, and louder than an acoustic (okay, unless you've got an electric acoustic, but just work with me), AND you can put whammies on them and stuff. If I were you, I'd get a job and buy a guitar (a good job, not some queer low-paying pansy job).

Well...thank you Jolly for your on the subject input. BTW..I have a gibson solid body electric which I DO play. I DO have a wonderful professional job working with contractors. You must have missed the direction i was going with my question. It was intended to create a more recordable tone for the equipment I have. I love playing all guitars and all styles that I have any experience with. I guess Ill just borrow my friends guitar and try the recording. Darn another road trip to Florida. **snapping fingers in mock disgust**

You kind of have to take Jolly's posts with a grain of salt.
He's way too sarcastic.
Just do what I do, ignore him.
Haha, j/k Jolly. :D

Hahaha, maybe so. But I will have my vengeance.

But seriously folks (note the Jay Leno line) We all have to go with jolly on this one. I mean Steel string acoustics really rnt that fun to play when it comes down to nylon strings or electrics. And just cuz jolly holds a grudge.... doesnt mean we take it out on him....... 2 much

I find the tone of a nylon string classical guitar a little too pure. I prefer a bronze-wound steel-string dreadnought for the same reason that I prefer a saxophone to a flute - more juice!

Ya I like the tone better, but I just like the over all playability of the other types better
