You probably wont find a new head with a good distortion for under $500. You might be able to find a decent solid state (or tube/solid hybrid) one for that price, though (but not an all tube one).

The Warhead that Dimebag plays is like $600 and the distortion rules.

It also depends on what sound you want to.. Tube amps are pricey. Solid state you could find. Tube amps in my opinoin are great, but can get muddy with to much bottem end. If your looking for heavy bottem end, solid state seams to handle heavy bass better. But thats just my opinion I could be wrong...

Try distortion pedals. See if you can find a Mesa-Boogie V-Twin, they only cost $200-$300 bucks, and when set up properly, they'll give you the Metallica sound you want (or close to it, you could nail it perfectly with a good cab and an eq pedal).

You can get a crate lead stack from samash.com for $599. You might try one of those new modeling amps too, the Crate DJX112 sounds good, gives you a varity of sounds, puts out 60 watts, andyou can get one from musiciansfriend.com for $419.

Stop lying!!! =)
I bought a V-Twin to use as a distortion pedal, but it sucked big time. I couldn´t get a decent distortion out of it.
So the heavyness of metallica is nothing you could gaurantee.
It was the worst peice of junk I have ever bougth. Don´t know if the one I bought was defect.
