Gibson Custom Lespaul , jackson [Randy R. model]
A good guitar does help, but put a bad guitar in a good guitarist hand and they can still make it talk.
agree or disagree?

Agree! It all starts with the head/heart/hands.

You seem to be down on Gibsons, but doesn't your hero play them exclusively?

To each his own, but I find Les Pauls a bit to heavy for my taste. I had one few years back, it was a 70's model. I threw some EMG's in there and it sounded pretty good. I got rid of it after a while.

I think I'm finally gonna break down and get a Fender Strat. I really don't like them (the neck, and the heel are my biggest problems) but Ido like some of the sound it produces. For the funky tunes.

Are there any alternatives? Any other guitars that have that sound? Pick ups maybe?

Okay...a lot of pretty good comments throughout this thread...
Recently (...yeah, one year...) I pulled a tendon in my fretting hand, making most attempts to grip and riff quite painful...it's much better now....a good recuperation. Oddly enough, a near saint in the guise of an old acquaintance dropped an unusual axe into my lap, so to speak, for web programming I was doing for him. A 1980 Gibson Sonex 180 Standard (...the poor man's Les Paul...)...never knew they existed. This odd boy really suprised me with its wider and slightly thicker neck (...much more comfortable to play...) compared to my '74 Strat and the flatter, thinner neck...suffice it to say, the Strat is now on its way to a new home in Canada, and the Sonex has taken its place at the front of the group...it may not "be" one, but it has the soul and voice of an old Les Paul...sweet and mean.

1980 Gibson Sonex 180 Standard (black) with Zebra style humbuckers
Danelectro Baritone (black) 1999
1968 Gibson J-45 Deluxe acoustic (cherry sunburst) with added Martin Thinline (1990) bridge pick-up...
...and the 1974 Fender Stratocaster I owned (...since 1978...), loved and souped up some, just sold...

You know, your right. As long as your comfortable with your guitar and sonic wise it can satisfy your needs. That's all that matters.

Some one said it was the player, not what he's playing.

Yup. Guitars don't make sound. I guarantee if you take even a $65000 vintage gretsch penguin (I've only seen it in arctic white..how ironic) and hold it up to your ear you won't hear anything, unless you hit it on something. I think there was some famous violinist who coined that idea a while ago after a misplaced compliment after a gig.

On the other hand, something an american strat is probably going to be way more playable and last way longer with way less problems than something like a epi or the lower range of ibenhad. :)

...man...you two were fast...hardly time to remove the PayPal buttons from the Strat sample page...LOL.
Contents should display properly now....

Wanted to say that, indeed, the Strat was too fine...a solid, slick and "pretty" axe...but with this Sonex in hand a wave of inspiration hits with the different feel and raw tone -- early Billy Gibbons in fact...does not seem to matter that it's a bolt-on neck, composite material body and looked as if it had lived on the rails when I got it (...before some TLC of course, and a warm basement...)...damn...basis for a screenplay? LOL
All it needs is new saddles, and a trip to the shop for proper set-up/intonation adjustment. It does weigh a ton and no doubt could beat off a pack of rabid dogs...

I had one (briefly) in '71. They had different pickups in them, which had lower output, and were meant to be super clean. At the time I was busy imitating Jimi, Jimmy, Jeff 'n Tony (Hendrix, Page, Beck & Iommi), so I unloaded it quickly.

Awesome guitar, although my all-time favorite dream guitar is the '58 Les Paul Junior doublecut in the cherry with the single P90. Yeah, has the chunkier neck and all, but man, do I love the sounds that come out of that single P90 with the single volume and tone knobs. That '50s wiring had a tone all its own... thanks for sharing that thought and triggering a great memory for me. (I got to handle a '58 back in the late '60s when a family member had one. I want one so bad now and they are expensive as h*ll, but one of this days... yeah, one of these days.)

This is an old thread... glad Jim picked it up.

Problem for me, is guitars are like girls. As soon as I see a pretty one...haha.

Well, married for 33 years and the one girl that would put up with me has allowed me many fancies from bikes and cars to now guitars.

If I see it and it turns me on, I want it.

PS:

I see that matonanjin2 has Seagull S6 Classic. I have the S6 Slim. Lovely guitars!

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!
