I don't know the diatonic scales. In fact, I had never heard of them until I saw them mentioned on this site. What is a diatonic scale? For the sake of ease, let's just say "what are the notes in the Am diatonic scale?" I should be able to figure out the rest once I know one.

A diatonic scale is simply a scale that uses seven tones. A major (aka Ionian), minor (aka Aeolion - natural, harmonic, or melodic), Dorian, Phrygian, Lyrdian, Mixolydian, and Locrian. Then there are blues scales and so forth. I recommend searching this site or going to cyberfret.com scales section and looking for the different scales and learn how they are different.

Lots of people are familiar with Pentatonic scales, if you are, they are the same thing only scales which use five tones.

Since you didn't really specify a type of scale ,the notes on a Am scale can be many different kinds.

Hope that helps.

The way you say it makes it sound like A natural minor is an example of a diatonic scale. In which case I do know my diatonic scales.

You most likey do know them, but haven't heard that term.

Either way I've got nothing better to do so here -

All do them in C because it's easy.
I assume you know the major scale as degrees as W W H W W W H so C D E F G A B (C).

Major (aka Ionian) - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
C D E F G A B

Harmonic Minor - 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7
C D Eb F G Ab B

Melodic Minor - 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7
C D Eb F G Ab B

Natural Minor (aka Aeolian) - 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
C D Eb F G Ab Bb

Dorian - 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7
C D Eb F G A Bb

Phrygian - 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
C Db Eb F G Ab Bb

Lydian - 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7
C D E F# G A B

Mixolydian - 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7
C D E F G A Bb

Locrian - 1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7
C Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb

Then there are countless others scales not only Diatonic ones though. If you want to learn more Diatonic only then here are some names of some - Diminished Whole Tone, Leading Whole Tone, Overtone, Lydian Augmented, Enigmatic, Double Harmonic, and Super Locrian. Those are the ones I can think of at the moment. Again there are much more, any combination of notes ascending or decending with seven tones.

If I miss printed or am just plain stupid please feel free to correct anything :)

Oh, ok, I'd just never heard the term diatonic before. Well this is a relief. Now to learn those leading whole tones and diminished whole tones and overtones and enigmatics and all those other crazy ass sounding things.
