Anyone here familiar with this guy? I wasn't familiar with him until recently when I bought a collection of his music. You rarely hear his name mentioned on guitar sites, but he's great! He plays a hybrid of Hendrix-style rock and Texas blues and his chops are very impressive. Awesome blues solos and his vocal style is very cool too. Some of you must like Johnny Winter, I'm sure. Check him out if you haven't heard him. If you're into shred, stay away. Johnny is blues-rock all the way. He's an easy cat to spot in a crowd. He's an albino. Long bright, white hair. Anyways, I'm really glad I picked up one of his CDs.

Yeah man Johnny is probably THE most under-stated Blues player ever.
For you who haven't got any of his cd's check out White Hot Blues. This guy seriously kicks ass! (oops, can I say ass on this forum?) :]

P.S Even of you're a Shredder, check this guy out and you'll appreciate the Pentatonic scales a bit more!

Edgar's brother - two albino brothers (how rare is that ??? -- one a rocker, the other stays true to his blues roots. I've listened to JW's playing since the early 70's; he just tears it up. Seems I saw him not too long ago on a tribute to Bob Dylan. JW took off on "Highway 61" and brought a broad smile to my face. He also guested on some other blues greats albums (details escape me at the moment) much as Duane Allman used to do. Now theres a duet I'd love to see.

I once saw a picture in some guitar magazine with Johnny and Buddy Guy having a guitar dual in some outdoor venue.
Talk about a dream duet!
Anyone know if this performance is on vinyl or cd?

Jake,

I believe that was Edgar Winter, Johnny's brother. I'm pretty sure Edgar plays guitar too, but is not quite the expert that Johnny is. Edgar had some hits back in the 70's with his Edgar Winter Group, most notably "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" (memorably featured in Richard Linkater's Dazed and Confused).

Go get Alligator's best of Johnny Winter cd. His version of "Third Degree" is just rippin. And I'd be remiss to say if you want a good live album with all the feelin and sloppiness get Johnny Winter And-Live.
Can we have everything louder than everything else???
