It depends on what you bought it for , but you can play guitar with it. ;)

OK dude, three approaches to playing slide: 1 tune your Axe to an open chord (I like E) and use it to cover many strings simultaneously. The trick with this style is to keep the slide strait and level with the fret board whilst playing. You also don't kneed to push down very hard. This is a sort of George Thorogood style.
The second is to leave your Axe tuned normally and play run with the slide a la Jeff Beck. This is difficult.
The third is to play runs using open tuning. This will fry your Brain if you try and think about it too much however sometimes just noodling about will produce some nice results !

Wear it on your pinky or ring (I prefer the ring), and keep all the fingers of your fretting hand together (as if you were holding a ham sandwich) and align the slide to the actual fret rather than above the fret.
I stole this from a hockey card, I keep tucked up under...
I mean, I stole this from a Dunlop slide package (except for the ham sandwich part, that was my idea!). I have a slide, too, and use it pretty sparingly/unconventionally, although I would totally love to be able to play it like Duane Allman or the like.

i personally use a very short glass slide (about 2 cm long) and i stick it on my middlefinger (!) like you would wear a ring, but not at the base of the finger but on the second joint. that way the tip of my finger is free to play normal runs and such but i can, at any point, switch over to use the slide. i maily use it in a jeff-beck kind of manner - i hardly every play those typical slide-cliche things for i simply HATE the sound of it.

It might be worth a shot if he tries it. I got a uncle who seems to think that is the answer to every question about "what to do with something". It's getting my 6 yr old nephew in trouble though, since he's freaking out alot of the gurls at his school.
