I just bought an ESP with Floyd Rose tremolo. I heard its a total pain to tune them. I wanted to hear opinions from people other than the ones i know. I mainly wanted them because tuning strings after each song is a hastle. Did i do the right thing? Thanks guys.

They can be great, if set up properly, and they can be your worst nightmare, if not set up properly.

It will take a while to get used to using it. The thing that I found works for me is say you are tuning your guitar with a chromatic tuner.

You tune them all to pitch right? So when you go back to the Low E it's no longer in tune. So whenever you see that it's not in tune, look at your tuner and see how many cents flat/sharp it is. (cent= number of dots on the tuner, 5 cents flat would be one bar left of in tune) Tune the string so it's 5 cents sharp. And then do the same for every string.

When you tune the low strings, it tends to pull the high strings out of tune, and vice versa, so using this trick will help. It also helps to tune like this:

Low E
then
High E
then A
then B
then D
then G

That helps with the tuning as well.

As far as everthing else it should be pretty cool.

A couple of down falls is you aren't going to be able to alter your tunings, (Drop D, D, B) very well, because the floyd has to be adjusted each time you change tunings, gauges of strings, etc...

Hope that helps. Anymore questions just ask.

Sometimes I hit notes only dogs can hear.

FR guitars takes more time to tune , but would stay in-tune forever unless the temperature change or a string breaks !

They are great as long as you do a few things:

1. When you change the strings, make sure you give them a good stretching as you bring them to tune, then pull on 'em a few more times and retune.
2. Spend the few bucks to purchase and install a Hipshot Tremsetter http://www.stewmac.com . This will take the place of one of your springs, and in the case of a broken string, the rest will stay in tune. I got about 20 of 'em and I love 'em.
3. Lock down the nut and give the strings a few dive bombs. Check your tuning, and retune. Usually after about 4-5 bombs, as long as you gave a good preliminary stretch, you should stay in tune.
Follow these few easy rules and you will stay in tune forever.

oops almost forgot, when you use the tremsetter in conjunction with a d-tuna, you can instantly go to drop-d tuning without having to retune. The tremsetter holds the floyd in place and the d-tuna drops the string... very cool indeed...

So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

I've heard those D-Tuna's are pretty much junk, I don't know how good they are with the hipshot though?

Do they work well with the hipshot???

I have an ESP/LTD MH-50 and it is a pain to tune and keep in tune. Thanx for posting this man.
If I leave here tomorrow,
Will you still remember me?

mine works flawlessly with the hipshot. I know they don't work worth a damn without a hipshot though. Any slack in tension will send the whole damn tremelo out of tune.

Hmm, I may have to consider getting one of those hipshots.

I know Vai has two in his "EVO" and he beats the **** out of that tremelo bar. :D
