There was some dire rock n fashion gig at the Albert Hall, London shown on TV the other night in the UK. Hosts were the 2nd worst actress on the planet aka Liz Hurley and Denis Leary. After a parade of usual naff suspects, shock of shocks. I had to rub my eyes for there was Perry Farrell and co. After the re-launch of Lollapallooza in a corporate stylee, is this a sign that the Addiction have finally sold out?

You know you're right, they have sold out... but I don't care. I prefer them taking the big bucks rather than Mr. Durst or Stinkin Park.
Plus, what actually selling out means? This is a very broad question...It's like asking what virtue is(I am studying Plato right now, so I'm in that kind of thing now :D)
I am quite happy with JA being very popular right now. I havent experienced that thing in my life before -- one of your favorite bands is breaking the charts...it's great.
And yeah their album sounds polished and produced, but I don't care man...I am so happy these guys are again together(well partially cause Eric Avery is missing).

I want the P-funk!

My band is better than yours...

It's easy. Selling out is compromizing your artistic creativity in order to make more money.
Keep in mind that there actually is a difference between "success" and "selling out."

I have Ritual de lo Habitual, and have heard sonbgs from the rest of their albums, in particular Strays, and altho the music does sound more polished, its still great music and doesnt feel like its intentionally commercialised to me. JA have always written great pop tunes, its the style that changes.

Selling out doesn't necessarily mean getting soft and diluting material for the mass market.

In my book it means taking the $/£ from the big corporates in sponsorship and promoting their big brands. Also it means being willing to share a stage with C-list celebrity bimbos.

Yeah, and when you suceed, you sell a lot of albums and this again means that you are selling out. And how do you judje if an artist is making a compromise with their artistic creativity, its really subjective. Can you give an example of a band that has not "sold out" and yet has sold millions of copies of their CDs? I can't...
Therefore in my opinion this dicussion is totaly useless and will lead to no conclusions, I am sure.

Are we on the same page here? You don't mean the literal meaning of the term "selling out" right? Like a "sold out" concert? Cause that's not what we're discussing.

"sell out:
3 [intransitive] (informal)
to abandon one's principles, standards, etc.
example: his best friends were accusing him of selling out"

You're right, the only people who really know if a band has compromized their artistic creativity in exchange for financial gain are probably the bandmembers and their representatives at their label.
But saying that every band that sells a lot of record is a sell out is just wrong I think.
But to each their own, it doesn't really matter, as long as you like the music, who the hell cares if a band has sold out or not?

Lets say I pooped an apple out of my butt...A real nice shiny, tasty looking, symmetricaly perfect apple. All in all one awsome apple...now would you eat it knowing damn well that my butt was a dirty place for such a nice piece of produce? What was the apple doing there? My butt, the apple or both must have an alterior motive...
If you dont understand...My butt is the record company and the apple is the band...

Integrity counts...otherwise the apple just tastes bad.

Later! \m/

:D that was good, I mean the apple that popped from your butt:) I see what you mean. And I agree with you. I just think we should not get carried away with this.
And I know what selling out means. Think of it in this way: everything which appears on te marked for mass consumption is being produced so that the mass listener would like it. You can't really know what happens in the studio, because as I said in some other thread, the final product we hear in the album is the result of the effort of a team of professionals who work with the musicians. For example ULTRA by Depeche Mode, which is one of the greatest albums according to me and many other people -- if you open the album cover you see that there is a separate guy who is responsible for te programing of the synths. As, if I understand this correctly, this works in te following way: the guy makes some presets and Martin Gore just says, for example,:"ok, I think I like this one" or "hmm, I think this has too much distortion" See what I mean? This is the reason due to which you can't judge who is really seling out. And again, they are all doing it for money, dude, don't forget that! Some even want you to clean their toilets if you do not pay for their music...
I would beable to tell for sure that someone is not selling out only if he has an already established business and just makes music for fun and decides to release it sometime, or post it online for free download. Like John Frusciante(RHCP) did with his solo album.
