Hey guys, I just started playin guitar again, ive only played for about 6 months, and i was lookin at some tab, and what are the X's on the strings? how do you play them? and i was wonderin if u could give me some good attention catchers and exercises, and does anybody know some pretty easy/good sounding songs? any help is gr8tly appreciated

X's usually means to mute the string.
Like a D chord would have an X on the 5th and 6th strings.

A nice, easy, but decent sounding song is the Beatles' "Something." I don't have the tab, but it's all over the internet you should have no trouble finding it.

Learn some OLD metallica, slayer and megadeth.Stuff from Ride the lightning/master of puppets, reign in blood/south of heaven, rust in peace/countdown to extinction albums.Learn any Iron maiden material.Yeah, all the stuff I listed is "intermediate" difficulty, but they're songs will equip you with an arsenal of techniques, will help begin shaping a style of your own and will familiarize you with the fretboard.Even if you dont play metal,it will give you an edge.
Try once,fail twice...

Yep, I agree with "chucklivesoninmyheart". Megadeth truly helps you alot in the long run.. So much differences from song to song, album to album. In the future at least I think you should listen to some Dream Theater..
But I would really wan't to give you an advice. Don't get stuck in the tabs. I did. After one year I only played after the tabs and I totally stoped "listening" to the songs. I mean, the author of the tabs didn't followed other peoples tabs. They listened to the song and tried to play it, only by guessing out the right tones.. It may take a while, but if you start with ultra-easy songs and just try to find the right way to play it, not using tabs or looking at a live concert to try to see where on the guitar he's playing the riff or whatever, you will start to train your ear. After some weeks, perhaps months, you will with no difficulty make your own tabs from songs you like.. I know that tabs really are temptating, but I only sees it as a trap..
Well, good luck anyway with your guitaring!

the x could also mean palm mute, creating a scratching, grating kinda noise, found a lot in rock.

Yeah, those X's are at the beginning of the acoustic intro to "Battery" by Metallica. Where it's still sorta acoustic but loud and with distortion. Think it just means to lay your fretting hands over the strings and pick them, making no actual note sound. Also at the beginning of "Sad but True" when it stops and then Lars hits the drums, that's when you scratch also. :D
The best music out is not on the radio or MTV!!!
