Yeah, those X's are at the beginning of the acoustic intro to "Battery" by Metallica. Where it's still sorta acoustic but loud and with distortion. Think it just means to lay your fretting hands over the strings and pick them, making no actual note sound. Also at the beginning of "Sad but True" when it stops and then Lars hits the drums, that's when you scratch also. :D
