Hi,

was just wondering what people's thoughts are regarding guitar synths? Are they cheesy or what? Practically speaking, what is the point of a technology that will cost you tons of money and can't even track properly? I remember playing with one back in highschool...and it didn't always track the strings accurately, let alone syncipate the audio in timing with what was actually being played.

If you are debating between purchasing a guitar synth pedal or an effects pedal, I'd have to argue go for the effects unit instead.

guitar to midi/synth technology has developed a great bit. The Roland GK Pickups track perfectly (of course you need ot set them up perfectly aswell) at almost any speed - even when you shred. there are very very good soundmodules out there with expandable sounds. i personally plan on getting one of those in the nead future. i tested the Axxon AX100 board at the musicfair in frankfurt and i was litterally blown away! i could play sax, horns, organs, winds, drums with NO flubs or anything - even with bends and odd-timings. its just a matter of setting up the pickup and the board - the distance betwen the pickup and the bridge and the distance between pickup and strings need to be entered very accurately into the converterboard and the type of guitar etc... once done you can play with no flubs at all. when the pickup is NOT set up in the right way, you´ll have all those midi-flubs and inaccuracies. so when you are goin to test those pickups in a musicstore and they dont work propperly, then you can be perfectly sure that they are not set up right.

I plan on getting te Roland GK2AH Pickup, the Roland GI-20 GK Midi interface (the best midi interface on the planet i´ve been told - and so say some reviews aswell) connected to the Roland XV 2020 Syth-module. go check http://www.rolandus.com

I use one on every recording & it's just an old 80's Roland GR700. The tracking is like any other instrument, ya have to learn how to use it properly.
It has to be set up regularly by making sure you have new strings and intonation etc... then you have to set the pickup to the right height and adjust the sensitivity.
Lastly, ya have to learn how to play slightly ahead of the beat...especially on the lower strings.
It's indespensible for recording. My old Korg Poly-800 bit the dust a few months ago so I had to use it for recording everything from drums to strings. (although I'm glad to finally have a new keyboard again..drums & strings are a big pain in the butt)

If I'm not mistaken you guys are talking about those little bar on those fenders which is made by Roland right? I reckon synth are mad, sometimes I wanna play violin but you wouldn't really don't want to learn another instrument.. then why not go for a synth. I see people on this board tapping away on the guitar like if its piano so whats the diff?

Mine's a huge footpedal beast about 3ft wide with it's own guitar & cost me a whopping 4 grand way back in the 80's.
You could probably pick one of em up for a few hundred bucks now.

I looked into synths a bit myself. I t hink that the pick ups are about Uk £400 and the box another £600. Pity really.. On the other hand you can use them to trigger pitch shifted samples. It is one of my ambitions to record birdsong and to compose melodies on guitar which immitate birdsong. I think that music is a mathematical language common between humans and birds, some pitches make sense together. I think that's very wonderful and it'd be nice to be able to jam with my avian relatives.
Song birds are described as "Oscine" meaning they have specialised vocal apparatus, most of them fall within the order Passeridae, other birds are called suboscines and are crap singers. I bet you didn't know this but some oscine birds can sing two notes at once because the two branches of their bronchi are both controlled by their syrinxes, the flaps of tissue whose torsion influences the pitch of sound created. Whillst one bronchus plays one note the other can play another, even switching it on and off.
So why do they sing? It has been argued that it demonstrates the healthiness of a bird. Song birds are territorial, if they are heard to sing from many different places they indicate to females that they defend a large territory and may be full of good genes and hence a good lay. Some say that birds sing so readily partly to give the illusion that the territory they are in is heavily occupied by song birds and this may go part way to explaining why some species have a variety of songs. Another explanation that has been posited for this is that females prefer males with wide repertoires because this memory of song repertoire is corellated to having a good memory of, for instance, where food can be found within a territory.
Blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla), Garden Warblers, Sylvia borin, Blackbirds (Turdus merula) and Nightingales Luscinia megarhynchos etc are just some of the many great european songbirds. Personally I like Mistle thrushes (Turdus Viscivorus) 'cause of their bleak whistful tone. There is a strong genetic component to the song of some birds but others such as the Marsh Warbler Acrocephalus palustris are mimics, and are truly improvising musicians like ourselves. Most are somewhere in between, male Chaffinches (fringilla colebs) which do not hear their fathers sing are comparatively crapper but then they're not much cop anyway.

Anyway, next time a bird ****s on you feel priveledged, they are the pinacle of evolution, masterpieces of adaptation and it takes millions of years to make an animal that can **** on you and sing about it without you being able to kick the crap out of it.

sorry, was that a bit of a rant or what?
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

I'd be happy if they'd just shut the hell up when I'm recording.

Don't know if any of you guys have ever heard Xanadu by Rush but they spoiled the start of it by adding bird calls - bloody chirruping house f****ng sparrows. ARgghhh.
