Probley isnt very good for devoleping technique, but its not a horrible idea, if the strings are detuned than you probley need it too.

Put a thin rubber band around the nut, make sure it's not to snug. Also, they do make dampers...most often used on Hollwbody guitars where the vibrations inside the guitar will cuase the strings to vibrate.

Its hardly cheating, many slide guitarists do that. The guy from lynyrd skynyrd when playing free bird for a start!

I almost always use one when tapping or recording.
It's a technique in itself, learning how to use it properly by pulling it down over the frets when you need it then pushing it back over the nut.
In recording you might even go so far as removing strings or using tape over them. Who cares if it's cheating as long as it sounds good.
If you're just learning to play tho, you might wanna learn your damping techniques first.

Donno , I don't think that muting other strings is that big deal anyway .

huh? How are you supposed to stop open strings from ringing on during leads if you don't mute them?

Digit - You've got me wrong, man ... What I meant was that muting isn't a big problem to do normally (left or right hand muting) , not that it's not important.

Even Jennifer Batten uses a dampner, she kicks much ass. If you're a real purist take up yoga so that you can sit and put your foot on your guitar neck as a dampner. If you get really good at it you could use your toes to fret pedal notes while you tap! Then you'll be a circus freak and I'll visit you in a big yellow tent along with the elephants and the minging clowns!
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?
