I've seen a few top 50/100 lists and most of the placings seem very odd to me. So just for fun I'm asking you guys either to post up your top 5 axe players or preferably you can email yor entries to:
asblaydes@hotmail.com

Cheers. It may seem a bit pointless but its only for fun. And I will post up the list on the 1st October.

In no particular order:
• David Gilmour - Pink Floyd

  • Slash - Guns 'N Roses

  • Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin

  • Jimi Hendrix

  • Edge - U2

  •
I know that within the next 5 minutes I'll want to change this list.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

    ALL generalizations are WRONG

In no order at all: Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, Joe Satriani, Azrael.

P.S. I'm not sucking up, Azrael is really good.

Dave Gilmour in the top 5 guitarists that ever lived? Yeah ****in' right!

I want to know how you figure that; He hasn't improved as a guitarist since 1973; Even admits it in inteviews. Says he wants to "Have a life".

my list in no particular order:
    Jason Becker
    John Mclaughlin
Jimi Hendrix (can't deny his influence)
    Jon Schaffer (for rhythm)
    Michael Romeo

although i must day Dave Gilmour has some of the best technique out of anybody

To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

...which fits rather well with your hypothesis about non-guitar-playing activities adding to your playing, yes?

As for not improving since '73, that begs the question "What needs improvement?" He's a damn fine player, and if you check out some of his work outside Pink Floyd, you'll find he does what he does at least as well as anyone else does. I can happily listen to his stuff for several hours - while supposedly superior virtuosos sound very stale after about 10 minutes.
