GuitarTricks is my go to for steady, organized, progressive lessons.  But, like everyone reading this, I wander around on you tube and a couple with a couple of well known instructors.  Anyway, they're talking about chord progressions, songs in different keys, boxes, etc.  If I have the tab for a song, I can follow along and/or play it, although not as smooth,or slick as Anders Mouridsen, but if someone says now let's play the song in G, or E or C, or whatever, they better hand me the tab in that key or I don't know how TF they're finding these different keys, like, "Of course, let's play it in G his time???" Or they start talking about different boxes, I just as soon pack up and leave.

My question is, am I way behind, or is it because I'm jumping around to these different sites, and in an attempt to learn more, I'm actually learning less?  Just to clarify, I'm still working my say through fundamentals 1.

Sounds like you are doing fine.  Maybe even a little ahead.  If you can play along with songs you want to play, that's great.  Being able to play music on the guitar is the purpose of taking lessons, learning & practicing.

Some of the topics you are asking about (changing keys, different scales & patterns) are well beyond beginner material.  And Fundamentals 1 is beginner material. If you keep working through GT material, you will eventually learn all that material & get it explained completely & properly.

Jumping from site to site might be slowing your progress with Anders, or causing frustration since they don't explain things completely.  But it is also a source of motivation to learn new things.  So, how much to focus on GT or jump around is a personal call for you.

But as long as you are learning, making progress & playing guitar, then you are doing fine.  Keep practicing!

Yes, as Christopher said you are doing fine. I have and still do jump around from here, YouTube etc - anything music.

Don't be worried about keys, it will come, in fact you will find that most of the songs you want to play are in only a few keys.

Meaning in reality, for most pop / rock songs of our generation at least, you really don't need that many chords.

Keys just mean certain chords and scales work together to make music we want to listen to

But here is a fun thing if you want to try it. We all have a natural key - mine is G but I can work with A as well. What this means is that when I sing - my voice is most relaxed in these keys. Just hum a hum - like "hummmm" and then try and find the note that harmonizes with your voice. Don't try and make your "hummm" match the note you are playing. Just keep your "hummm" steady.

Whatever that is, is where you will be most comfortable when singing.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

I would recommend doing both Anders and Lisa’s fundamentals courses. While there is some duplication they complement each other well. Lisa’s L and  backwards L (can’t remember exactly what she calls it) will answer your key question. If someone says let’s play in A. Find your A note on the 5th or 6th string use the 1, 4 & 5 chords from the appropriate L as a starting point and you are in the right key (for major keys).

Y'all are always so encouraging and helpful and I really appreciate it.  I can tell you this for sure, I'm a commercial pilot and flight instructor and learning to play the guitar is a lot harder than learning to fly an airplane!

Thanks for all of your ongoing help!
