Hello, my name is Michael Manning. I live in Louisville, Kentucky. I am 58 years old. I have tried playing guitar several times in the past, but haven’t stuck with it. I’m really determined this time and have enjoyed picking it up again. I tried guitar tricks a couple years ago. Any recommendations on a specific path to follow? I enjoy classic country, rock. John Prine and Bob Dylan are two of my favorites.

Hi Michael, and welcome!!!

I love your taste in music - right up my alley!

Depending on how strong your foundational skills are, you might go straight to the SONGS section, or SONGS MADE EASY section, and see how you do playing some songs that you know and like.

If you discover that your skills are rusty, or lack some of the "basics", then I'd suggest you select one of the Guitar Fundamentals Courses, which are designed for total beginners. You may be able to skip around and skip ahead some, but Fundamentals will help you make sure your guitar-habits and general  understanding of the instrument are in good shape.

There is a Guitar Fundamentals course created by Anders Mouridsen, and one created by me. We have slightly different teaching styles, so check them out and see which resonates with you the best.

Hope this helps a little - and once again, welcome!

Thank you Lisa,

I have begun the course by Anders.  So far, I am enjoying it and looking forward to picking up the guitar on most days.  Some days only a few minutes, and others for up to 30 minutes.  I am really determined to keep it up this time.  Thanks for the message and encouragement.

Good luck with it Michael! This is the place to be. I have been here 3 years and found the lessons and support to be outstanding. The key as you put it is consistency. Getting your hands on your guitar each day even if it is for a few minutes will pay off. Try and find event one thing (no matter how small) that improved each practice session for continued motivation. Let us all know how doing as you for further in your journey.

Hi Michael

I was 57 when I thought it might be a good idea to learn how to play the guitar I bought when I was 17! Still at it but now in my 60s.

best of luck

Michael,

You're in good company in here. Lots and lots of us Boomers dusting off guitars and making another run at becoming musicians. I was just rummaging around my cluttered basement and came across an acoustic guitar I've had now for 51 years... and it's in mint condition, if that tells you anything about how little I've played it. Nevertheless, with Strat in hand, I declare; "Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!".

In any case, don't be shy about using this forum if you acquire doubts, get confused, or lose motivation.

Hello,

I played bass and guitar for 10yrs as a teenager and early 20s. I never learned proper techniques. I haven’t licked it up in 20yrs and now want to learn proper techniques and eventually be able to shred some solos. Starting from the ground up is what I’m thinking to get back into the swing of things and learn properly.

Thanks

Bob

Hello Michael! Great to meet you and welcome back to the guitar journey from Louisville! Sticking with it this time sounds like a solid plan, especially with musical heroes like John Prine and Bob Dylan guiding your inspiration.
