I recently picked up learning guitar on an acoustic I've owned for 20+ years. The strings probably haven't been changed in all that time but the guitar has barely been touched. Are the strings likely due to be changed or are they ok until they break? Also, suggestions for what to buy if so. It currently has steel strings (not sure of size)

For the price of some strings, yeah, they might be a bit gross to play on. Steve White is the tech guy here maybe check with him but I think he would say the same. If you do contact him he'd probably like some details on the guitar, but as your just starting out again, some light acoustics might be easier on your fingers. Brands are a matter of preference, I like Gibson strings on my acoustics but that is me.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

The strings are due to change, especially if they haven't been replaced in over 20 years. Over time, steel strings lose their tone and can become brittle, making them more prone to breaking. I’d recommend switching to a fresh set of steel strings. For an acoustic guitar, a popular choice is the "D'Addario EJ16" phosphor bronze light gauge (12-53) for a balanced sound, or you could try "Elixir Nanoweb" for longer-lasting strings.

Thanks for the advise! I've ordered some D'Addario 12-53's and a tool for changing them and just discovered a whole section on changing strings in the lessons here on Guitar Tricks.
