I am trying to learn to play guitar. My friend said to start with songs instead of chords.

So, what is the first song you learnt on guitar?

I don't agree with your friend's advice, but one of the first full songs I learned was Nirvana's "About A Girl" - The lesson here on GT is great.

This is going back a few years, but the first songs I learned in guitar was Pictures of Matchstick Men, Peter Gunn, and Secret Agent Man

Breaker heart, this is a pretty simple and useful song to practice on.

I hope what your friend meant was, figure out a song you really want to play and is accessible to your skill level, then learn what you need to play that song. As opposed to just learning chords and scales for the sake of learning them.
