Hello -

I am a total newbie and have been retired for several years. I always wanted to play the guitar, however never had the time to commit until now.

Looking for suggestions to exercise and stretch my fret hand, I'm having trouble getting it to go where I want it to without pain.  Nothing wrong with my hand its just muscles and tendons too tight not stretched out I can see and feel the tightness. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Welcome.

I found this on the site, it may be a part of the New Fundamentals course.

I think starting out with Fundamentals would be a very good place to start.

Your hand will gain both strength and dexterity with regular practice.

Good luck.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

The Spider exercise is useful and this mod by Justin I found beneficial, https://www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/finger-stretching-exercise-te-101 .  Start where its comfortable on the fretboard and, as you get better, move towards the first frets for a good stretch/workout.

IMO, it's good to start a practice session with a warm-up and this is one of the good ones.

Good luck, have fun.

Yes, john, it's a great video. I practiced following it.
I have the worst combination of finger attributes--short and fat, so this is hard for me. One thing that I found helpful is that instead of working my way down from the thick E to the thin E, I go from the 1st string to the 6th. This means that I start from an easier position to a more difficult one because of the neck. It seems to help, particularly when starting off.
Just a thought.
