dear fiends

i'm considering an SG purchase soon, i appreciate feedback on the following units:

*SG Special
*Faded series- 2 versions: Older- crescent inlays. Current- dot inlays

about the faded series, some had warned me about the thin body finish, hence susceptibility to scratches. others have discouraged the SG purchase altogether, the primary reason being the SG's weak neck. appreciate your opinions. kudos in advance... :)

I had a '62 (?) SG that was so weak at the neck joint, it was scary. Tuning one string would put the rest out by changing the tension on the neck! More recent models have a little more wood between the neck and the pocket for the pickup, but it's still kinda flexy.

I haven't actually held one of the 'faded' axes in my hands, so this is just hearsay... the finish is more like a rubbed tung-oil than a hard laquer. This wouldn't be as shiny as the top-line stuff, or as durable, but it would be easy to maintain.

Bottom line... any axe that feels good in your hands, and makes your ears smile, is a good one.

I have a 74 SG special (I beleive, always forget that).

the neck had been broken before I bought it. I know a lot of people who's neck got cracked.

For me it's the best guitar I've played with. It does detune easely as Lord said. Mine is really scratch and looks very bad :), but plays like hell. Personnaly I don't care about scratches, these things will happen.

One tip, beware of belt buckles when playing, you should see the back of me SG, ouch!

Since about 1967, I've always worn my belt with the buckle set off to the side. Simple and effective. :)

Nice trick, now I will be able to play with my pants on lol

Not very fun to loose your pants in front of a crowd... well depends which crowd, but lets not get into this.

so that's the main concern with the SG- its neck. tony iommi once said his SG goes out of tune every time the wind blows... if that's any indication of the neck strength, it's really scary... between the Les Paul & the SG, i prefer the latter's tone & feel, but i'm just gonna audition the SG again to see if it sticks with me... thanks for the inputs thusfar... :)

what are some precautions because Ive got one coming to me mail order.Cant wait to get it but guess 9s will be all i use on it.Im pretty good w/my guitars since they dont leave the house 99% of their life.I hope i dont have tuning issues that will drive me nuts, cause i have an ol kay that could be dropped off a house and it stays tuned.I love the neck on it but i will have to sell it to make payments on the sg.
I have to put my finger where?

They have gotten better with the neck joints on those guitars but they are still not that great. Also with the faded series it could be worse because if I am not mistaken, the neck pickup is much closer to the fingerboard than in some of the more expensive models.

Also about the finish, just don't sweat the small stuff.. They make paint in cans for a reason... :)
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

I would imagine that the SG Supreme would have no such flaws considering the price.Eh,just get an ESP Viper standard(not the Ltd series...ESP...its like epiphone compared to gibson).
