I noticed that a lot of people have mentioned Metallica’s ‘ONE’, I think that I such a good solo because it’s so simple, yet it sounds so good. I also think ‘FATAL TRAGEDY’ by Dreamtheater is good.

I have an MP3 of Stevie Ray Vaughn playing rude mood on acoustic - let me tell you about mindblowing.

As far as some cool solos (or close to favs)

Steve Vai in crossroads - Eugenes trick bag
stevie Ray Vaughn doing Jimis' - Voodoo Chile (Live of course)

lastly, but definetly not least
Steve Vai - For the love of god (G3 album)

Death - A Moment Of Clarity. Chuck Schuldiner's solo brings me to tears. His starts after Shannon Hamm's sweeping. It's just amazing. It's not really shreddy or anything...But it's what i think a solo should be.It's really emotional, and it compliments the song perfectly. Which i think most solos don't.

Guys, the longer I´m here in the forum communicating about guitar and stuff the more i get considered how bad i am. It can´t just be that the one solo after the finger tapping part is soo simple. Maybe it´s just because i play only for 5 month, but i always thought the one solo is hard at some parts or at least it looks fast when i see kirk playing it.

The best solos i ever heard were:
Blackened and Disposable Heroes - Kirk Hammett
Hotel California -Eagles ( not that hard but it sounds real good)
Van Halen - Erruption
and many stuff from many guitar heroes

I haven't heard a better solo than Megadeth's Hangar 18 (not the ones during the tradeoff near the end but Marty Friedman's hungarian scale solos after the tempo change).

when you say 'solo' do you mean guitar breaks as opposed to guitar-based instrumentals like 'Surfing with the alien'?

fave breaks -

Elliot Randall on Steely Dan's 'Reeling in the years'
Dave Gilmour on 'Another brick in the wall'
the solo on Jerry Rafferty's 'Baker street'
the sitar bit on the Dan's 'Do it again'
all the breaks on Satch's 'Big bad moon' esp the slide part.
Albert Lee on 'Country Boy' esp the intro
all the solos on Molly Hatchett's 'Boogie no more'
'Spirit in the sky ' the original version - I love the tone

I'd have to narrow my decisions down to some crazy songs.

Megadeth - Hangar 18, Lucretia, and Tornado of Souls

Nevermore - 42147 and Ambivalent two awesome solos by Loomis.

Demoniac - Demoniac Spell - Some hilariously crazy guitar playing...

Jason Becker - The whole album Perpetual Burn is obscene

Yngwie - Black Star, Far beyond the Sun

Friedman - Anvils, Saturation Point, Forbbiden City

Van Halens - Eruption is pretty crazy for a solo piece

Morbid Angel - Hymn To A Gas Giant, Chambers of Dis, Azagthoth <--funny as hell and insane; Secured Limitations

Death - Scavenger of Human Sorrow, Overactive Imagination, Voice of the Soul owns me.

That's about it. There are tons of awesome guitar solos. My favorite out of all those is still Perpetual Burn.

Extreme - Play with me is probably oen of my all time favourites, other than that

Steve Vai - The Audience is Listening (that is so funky its rediculous)

or much slower theres Nuno's 'Gates of Heaven' or something like that which they tacked onto the end of rock a bye bye

Hmm, the best that comes to mind recently was Tony Macalpine's solo at the end of CAB, I saw him a couple nights ago, damn he was cookin. Its good to see that he's actually progressed in the last 15 years (unlike many guitarists of his day).

And although I'm still not really impresesd by his technicaly ability, I did hear a couple really cool licks in the solo section of a joe satriani song... Cool #9 I believe.

Yes i agree hanger 18 solo is very good. I have to say , i think the solo in gods made heavy metal by manowar is one of the nicest and well put together solo i've heard !
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.
