Sorry about the large amount of thread postings. :)

Anyways, I just wanted to know some of your advice on sweeping.

I've been starting with just basic practice stuff on all 6 strings.

Doing like:

e|---------------------7----5---------------------------
B|-----------------6------------6-----------------------
G|-------------5---------------------7--------------------
D|---------7------------------------------5---------------
A|-----6----------------------------------------6----------
E|-5--------------------------------------------------7----

I've gotten to play this cleanly and getting it up to a pretty good tempo. What should I be more concetrated on, my left hand or right hand? Should I worry about hitting the notes or keeping a smooth sweep with my right? I know I should be trying to hit the notes but I don't want to build a bad habit with my right.

Thanks in advance.

im no sweep expert..concentrate on keeping both hands cooridnated at the same tempo/speed..wat do you mean by hitting the notes..some advice is roll ur hand which is lifting each finger after each other so the string doesnt ring out

I've got the basic idea down to not let the strings ring out.

My first question about missing the notes is stupid, just ignore that.

Well from practicing this lately, I seem to find the 4-6 string sweeps easier than 2-3 string.

Just my opinion. :)

You can't generalize 2,3,4,5,6 or string sweeping ... Some 3 string sweeps with a fast small piece of a scale on the first or the last string can be realy tough to learn ... But generally , a basic 3 string sweep should be easier than a basic 6 string sweep , specialy for the fretting hand.

I've posted some basic 3-string sweep pattern exercises a while ago , you can find them here : http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=6272&pagenumber=lastpage

start as slow as humanly possible. Make sure each note is being hit clean and steady, before you move on to the next. Do it so slow that it bugs you to death, then faster and faster, as your coordination between each hand synchronizes.

I started by switching between 5 and 3 stringers, simply for songwriting purposes, then i started doing 6 and 4 stringers. make sure your transitions from one sweep to another are as clean as each note hit, obviously.

if you want a great example and good explanations, then check out everything that The Jonezter put on here, cause he is quite proficient in the sweeping area.

im no expert on this but i found this routine to be very effective for me, worked on it for about a week and did wonders for my speed and tone:

1.using a clean tone, crank the mid all the way up and use the bridge pickup, practice the arp/sweep very very slowly, if you want you can use alternate picking, the important thing is to accustom your fingers to the shape of the sweep, never ever speed up, not unless its very clean 2. speed it up, then use the picking hand to mute, moving it with the pick as you sweep. the amount of muting that you apply is up to you, the idea is to eliminate the noise and not the tone of the note that you are picking 3. if still not satisfied, use the neck pickup turn the mid down then add some ditortion and voila! instant burst of speed :)

it took me abt 6 mos of useless practice and just a week of realization to make it work, and i don't want anybody to waste time like i did (lol) its hard to explain verbally but hope this helps. sorry for the long post :)

Im just getting into sweeping and I have noticed that when I am practicing any arpeggio at the 12th fret it sounds a harmonic when I lift my finger. What can I do to remedy this? Thank you

Depending on the string , if it's a high (treble) string , use your picking hand's fingers (middle, ring or pinky) to mute after you play the note, if it's a low (bass) string , use your picking hand's palm after you play the note too not to sound like PM (there's no problem with PM in sweeps anyway).

Sometimes you can use fretting hand finger muting techniques (but usualy they're pretty busy , specialy if your playing a massive 5 or 6 string sweep) like if you were playing the 12th fret with any finger other than the index , you can use the index by laying them on the strings to perfectly mute them with no harmonics sounding.

This wouldnt be a sweep discussion is I didnt bring this one up.

E|---------------7-12-7---------------|
B|-------------8--------8-------------|
G|-----------9------------9-----------|
D|---------9----------------9---------|
A|----7-10--------------------10-7----|
E|------------------------------------|

My question is:
Is there a more efficient way than using my ring finger
to sweep both up/down on the 9th fret D and 9th fret G strings?
Releasing pressure in the joints of my ring finger dosnt sound the greatest.I could just let them ring(ha ha get it?ring!)but that would defeat the purpose of a sweep.

Also, would it be better to "pull-off" the 12th to 7th fret high E string and start the sweep back down at the 8th fret B string?Or not "pull-off" and start the sweep back down at the 7th fret high E?
Later! stay metal! \m/

chucklivesoninmyheart - I wrote a massive post a couple of months ago about that minor arpeggio you're having prob with (it was just Amin instead of Emin that you posted :) ) ... Check it out here : http://www.guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=6169

Read the whole thread thoroughly , you may find some usefull stuff within too .
