I don't know anything about guitars adn i am interested in playing. WHat guitar do you reccomend.

I am leaning toward acoustic for reason such as playing it in my room.

Electric would require an amp. I may purchase one at Guitar Centet for $249 its a package deal. What do you think guys

I have 3 acoustics the newest being a Martin Standard Series 000-18 which would set you back around $2000. You cant go wrong with a Martin but as there are nearly 200 models ranging from $600 to over Ā£25000 you have a fair bit of choice. There are other great makers like Collings, Taylor and Fylde. I seriously recommend you dont blow your money on a cheapo effort. With acoustics, cost really does reflect quality. Also you've got to figure out the styles of music you wanna play. if jazz then you need an arch-top. if gypsy jazz you need a 'macaferri' style guitar with small oval soundhole. if youre looking at flatpicking you need a narrower neck than for finger picking. as for string guages, I find lighter best for finger style and heavier for flatpicking.

I have a Levin handbuilt guitar, and it didn't cost me more than $400.
I've tried numerous >$1000, but my Levin is the best
one I've played so far. I do agree cost reflects quality
to a certain degree, but if you're just starting out,
there is no need for such extravagant purchases.
I think a decent Yamaha or Alhambra would make excellent beginner guitars,
so I think you should get something like that.
A really expensive guitar is like an extreme sportscar;
It's the best you can get, but if you've just started driving,
you would be better off with a cheaper car thats easier to drive.
Ok so maybe that was a really bad analogy but I hope you get my point.
I've seen alot of people not daring to buy beginners guitars,
so instead they buy the new Stratolux 4000 with 34 strings,
which although you might "grow into" after a while, it
can be a bit much if you've never played before.

Oh well, I shalt not make this post too long, although
I'm afraid it already is, so I'll just say good luck
with your future guitarplaying!

Remember electrics are easier to play than acoustics and you can use headphones with most practice amps. Both these things are good for beginners !
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

I want to play DMB, Led Zeppelin so a guitar that can play a variety. i looked at a package deal on musiciansfriend for the Ibanez. But i may just get a guitar and some basic stuff i am on a budget.

Thanks everyone

I would have to say that squires would be a good starter if you like strats, and I am sure there are other off name brand things that would match a jackson or Ibanez. I remember seeing A Fender strat once for like 99$ at a music store, but who knows.

Tell you what: look around at pawn shops. That's where I got my guitar (an Ibanez RG270), and I've seen MANY other great guitars at pawn shops. Keep your eyes peeled for brands like Fender, Ibanez, Yamaha, Dean, Squier, Epiphone, etc. Don't buy a real s#|++y guitar, like a Drive, or a Galveston, and whatever you do, DON'T BUY THE GUITAR PACK AT WAL-MART!!! lol
