I have 3 acoustics the newest being a Martin Standard Series 000-18 which would set you back around $2000. You cant go wrong with a Martin but as there are nearly 200 models ranging from $600 to over £25000 you have a fair bit of choice. There are other great makers like Collings, Taylor and Fylde. I seriously recommend you dont blow your money on a cheapo effort. With acoustics, cost really does reflect quality. Also you've got to figure out the styles of music you wanna play. if jazz then you need an arch-top. if gypsy jazz you need a 'macaferri' style guitar with small oval soundhole. if youre looking at flatpicking you need a narrower neck than for finger picking. as for string guages, I find lighter best for finger style and heavier for flatpicking.
