I've been playing for a year 1/2 now, and I'm going to get an electric guitar. I'm into the blues and alternative. I'm not going to leave my acoustic behind for I will always love it, but I need some advice on what to get. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I know I will get hassled for this because I am a Kramer Man, but if you are looking for a wicked guitar that is very versitale, check out the Peavey Wolfgang Special EXP. They are built overseas but they are made to the exact specifications as the expensive wolfys. Of course they are still between 5-700 dollars new, but I have seen some on ebay for 250-350 dollars. They make a fixed bridge model, and a floyd rose model depending on your taste. Check them out on the peavey website.
Of course if you want an awesome guitar cheap, check out the Kramer telecaster models and a few of the other models on http://www.musicyo.com
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

Surprised anyone remembers me, but thanks. Thanks for the advice. Also, if anyone has a reccomendation for an amp, because I don't know a lot about them. The dude at the store though was trying to sell me a vacum tube one, and it was akward.

Best advice I can give you is go to the store and find something that "speaks" to you. I don't know about you guys but for me, when I see a guitar and play it, it either speaks to me or it doesn't.. hard to explain but it's how I've gone about looking for each guitar I've ever owned.

As for amps, don't settle. Get exactly what you want. I liken buying an amp to buying a monitor for your computer.. you can upgrade the **** out of your pc but the monitor is the one thing that stays with you.

Think about the uses that you'd have...
do you need it to be portable? you don't wanna lug a cabinet and head around to practice...
Do you wanna wake the neighbors and shake the house down?
there are soooooo many choices out there for amps it'll give you a headache by looking at them all - define what you "think" you need and want and go from there...

hope this helps ya!

Go with a fender mexican standard or epiphone les paul, i find yamaha to be cheaper then fender and they also sound alright. Of course it wont take you long to want new pick ups. Ive change my pick ups on both guitars to fender texas special and seymour duncons alnico II. As for an amp, go strait to tube. Dont screw around with solid state. Tube can be expensive though and if money is a problem then solid state is a viable option. The best thing to do is to go to the store and try before you buy, and i know youll find the right amp and guitar you like.
WWSD? What would stevie do?

My 2c, second hand Fender strat (check out at least 6 in different stores and select the one you like best). You should be able to get a really nice axe for 500 USD.

Then depending on what you want to do, spend the rest of your budget on either a floor board (with a headphones socket)(ie Digitech GNX2) for home practice or a little amp (like the Mini/Mico Marshall stacks (they rock and they are cheep !.

You will then be the queen of tone and set to rock and roll !

Me, Im off looking for a Les Paul on the 14th so Im totally excited to !!!

Happy hunting

Welcome back, Holly!

About the only thing I can say for sure, is that after you've had your first electric for a while, you're going to want to change something. This is because you can't really know what you want until you've been playing for awhile. Don't worry about getting just the right axe first time out. Poke around in the used guitar racks, try out everything you can get your hands on, and remember to assess an instrument with your ears open, and your eyes shut.

Use the search button at the top of the page to dig some old threads out of the archives. A lot of us have laid out some good stuff over the years. If you find a thread that raises some more questions in your mind, post a reply to it, and we can have another go at it.

Happy hunting,
L.

After 5 years, I'm finally getting a new guitar since my first one. It took me awhile to figure out which kind to get, but after playing that Dean for so long I knew actually what kind of neck, bridge, etc. I wanted. The guitar that I ended up choosing is a Carvin 7-string.
