hi! I started taking guitar lessons for a few months ago.i find finger picking and note playing okay but i have problems strumming the chords and singing as i m confused by the rhythm .Anyone know what can i do? Thank you!

Practice Polyrythms!

Like play 3 notes on the guitar and sing a melody of 4 notes.
looks like this:

V--1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4
G--1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3-1 ...etc

V=Vocals
G=Guitar
That would be 3:4 (3 on guitar and 4 on vocals)
Also practice 3:5, 4:5, 5:7 and so on.

You do not necessarily have to pay too much attention to what the melody is and some of the notes might sound odd otgether - its basically about independance - doin two things at the same time.

hmm... thank you for relying.. does that mean i play 3 notes of the melody and sing 4 notes at the same time?

Go to my host section - its the link in my signature below this post - there you wil lfind a tutrial on polyrythmics - but thats a different kind of polyrythmics than the one i ust meant in my previous post (of course both are worth beeing practiced)

what i meant was you play all the notes at the same time, only different patterns - the one consisting of 3 notes and the other of 4 notes - so the melody starts turning around and eventually comes back to the start.

like:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4
1 - 2 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 3


As you can see when the 4th note of the fist melody is played, you already play the first note of the second melody again. this way the whole thing starts to turn around.

Can you fingerpick and sing at the same time? If not then you just need to practice doing two things at the same time.

Try strumming the song repeatedly until you have it perfectly, then try singing with it, when playing and singing you really need to concentrate 90% on singing, so the guitar needs to be almost automatic.
