Satch sounds

I've been trying to work out how Satch gets his trademark tone but am not quite getting there. anyone know what effects, string guages, amp set-up and other tricks of the trade he generally uses?

He use Boss DS-1 pedal for distortion through a marshall (not sure of the model) , his rig is usualy basic and simple .

I think he makes his amp a little dirty in combination with the pedal to get his tone ... I've tried the DS-1 pedal many times through clean amps and it's not enough for a big distortion tone.
