Is there a way to preserve your strings as long as possible? Eventually they'll rust but is there a way to slow the rusting from happening?

I've got a hardcase with sillca in it? Does sillca retard the rusting?

Changing strings too often is costly so please do share your maintaince tips

Your local guitar shop should have a spray that you can use to help preserve them - but even at the least, wipe your strings down with a clean lint-free cloth after everytime that you play and that will help remove the oils left behind from your hands (the number one thing that damages the strings).

Use "ghs - Fast Fret" , it prevents the strings from rusting , and prolongs the freshness of the new strings tone.

If you don't wanna use it , just clean the strings (each string individualy) each time after you finish playing ... It's guaranteed for effectiveness.

As long as posibble. Somtimes when I break them I put them on again (my invention) but when they start to sound false, than I change ´em all. They usuaully last for a month our so.

LOL
I used to do that too :D ... It's a great trick when you're outa money !

I have a Floyd Rose bridge , so you cut the ball end before you install the string , therefore if I broke the string near the bridge all I have to do is get more of the string out of the machine heads and install it again.

Nowadays I can't stand the tone of rusty strings , so I normaly change them every 4-6 weeks ... They usualy break after 6-8 weeks if I didn't change them.

Heavier gauge last longer , but I keep with .010's for the playability.

Good insight on other player's lives. I don't get to talk to many guitarist for some reason, maybe not at the right place. Got a new guitar teacher and starting next week, looking very much forward to it.

Strings are costly in Sydney don't know about US.. Think I'll resort to re-using the strings too heh!

I'm not picky with sound which ain't good. I'm not ear trained at all. I only change the strings when they get rusty, cos its gets annoying to bend and slide, not cos they sound weird. Frankly I can't tell the diff.

Strings are pricey here, ernie ball string sets here are like 18 bucks (when bought singularly). If bought in bulk, a bit cheaper, like 10 for price of 8.

 Rich and successful with music. What a blessed life. But that's pretty funny with the students running to search the trash cans. I would do the same :D

Heard so much about this placed called Berklee. Is this the Mecca of Music? Heard the Dream Theater boys are all from Berk, so are many talented musicians. Is there a test to get in?

I think what you said is true, unless you're top of your game you'll be a replica of someone else.
