Stay cool, don't get too worked up about the whole thing, and play them what they'll want to hear. That's about it.

Try to get hold of thier songlist beforehand or know some of thier material. It's better to jam something everybody knows that shows off your chops rather than standing around desperately asking "do you know this one?...how about this one??"

Basically I would try to not play out of key. First, get them to show you a song they do. Learn the basic chords. Then, try to find a simple riff or synchopated chord progression that you can play in each song.

Lots of times I just play one note funky style until I get the hang of it. Or just arpeggiate the chords they showed me.

I wouldn't try to show technical skill except in a lead. Instead I would try to show musical catchiness.

Also, if everyone is playing complext stuff, play simple. If everyone is playing simple, play complex.

Hope this helps.

be confident but don't be egotistical
alot of people get nervous and such, and it can reflect in their playing, I learned that the power is on your side, the best weapon is preparation.

Don't forget that it is not only you that is being auditioned but being in a band that has auditioned a lot of people, the existing band will feel like they're being judged as well. and they are. When I show up I don't think about myself being judged but, rather, are these people doing anything I'm interested in and are they good enough for me. It kinda takes the edge off you feeling pressure. let them carry the weight of feeling pressured.
