i thinks it sounds great when the bass plays a different riff than the guitar and have it work. Anti-Flag does it really well. their song 'Stars and Stripes' on Underground Network has great bass riffs and it fits great with the guitar which plays simple power chord riffs.
some people can mirror the guitar and make it good. but VERY rarely. i don't think bass should mirror the guitar. it's an instrument to itself and should give a song a whole new dimension instead of making one dimension slightly heavier or whatever.
Thanks for listening to this small piece of me.

also, i think that it's terrific when people have conflicting opinions. it makes your ideas and thinking stronger. i mean, if someone really thinks someone is a great guitarist and another guy proves that he sucks terribly; than the first guy has just benefitted from an opinion opposite to his.
but when people get all pissy over it, it becomes boring and repetitive. but constructive arguments are one of the best ways to learn. not petty spats though.

And that, folks, is the sound of the hammer hitting the nail directly upon the head.

I agree w/whoever said they like bass players who come up w/their own parts and don't mirror the guitar. Down w/the root huggers.
I also think a decent bass player should have an understanding of how to walk a bass line and be able to play a 12bar blues (at least).

that was me. i think that bass today is like a musical mirror.
you guys really gotta check Anti-Flag out. i really suggest Underground Network(the album). it's got great bass riffs. i always preach this album for bassists.

No way do I think he's the worlds greatest bass player or anything but Paul McCartney used to come up with some nice melodic ideas for bass parts in the later years of the Beatles.

Paul Macartney was a great bassist. also, we can't forget John Entwistle! one of my favorite bassists. his bass solo on The Who's "My Generation" was great. and he's a good bassist anyway.

Check this out - Neck through body construction, mahogany neck with maple stringers, imbuya body, passive (but good sounding) pickups...
$500.
I played one the other day, and it ruled. Now if only Peavey had picked a better name for it...
