If you're really serius about playing, get a teacher. They can spot and tell your mistake, and what you lacks at the moment.

Don't give up. I've been playing a little over two years and I just now finally got a teacher. He's a really great musician. Just try to take lessons and don't give up alright.
Also, take your time if something dosen't sound right just work w/it till you figure it out, but don't overdo it, if it gets frustrating then stop. Don't practice that song or whatever for the rest of the day just play somethin else and go back to that the next day. My guitar teacher had me to go out and buy an oven timmer and to practice only thrity mins. a day w/ what we went over, and as soon as the alarm goes off stop no matter where your are. It works, it has helped me alot. You then play whatever you want when I said stop i didn't mean stop. Just don't practice that. Also get out and jam w/someone on sats. and suns. if you can, but don't practice on thoese days. It works try it.

I wouldn't give up either. Try some new licks...something easy that sounds right for starters, then move on to some harder stuff slowly. Sounds like you may be trying to play stuff that's just too advanced for you right now - and it's got you frustrated.

Sounds like you need to be working with either a click track or a metronome. A good teacher is a plus. Don't just take anyone for a teacher though, because there are some bad ones also. Interview them like you would a perspective employee, because after all, they are there for you and not the other way around. Ask a lot of questions, ask for references, and even get a sample of his playing. Some more reputable teachers will even give you a few sample lessons to see if they are for you.
Edit:
Almost forgot, you can also check out http://www.riffinteractive.com for some free lessons and cool riffs. http://www.wholenote.com also has a metronome you can download and also a tuner for free. hope these help

So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

I started guitar with a teacher at a local music shop, where I also got my first electric, he first got me to bang some chords and later play in sync. But then he was a bag of ego, thats why I eventually kicked him. However I still feel the need of a mentor who can correct your progress.
So shop around, who knows if there are any good players in your area

I recommend trying to play with the music. Have a set of headphones with the real song you're trying to play, and play along with that. It works for me. Also, like the others said, try investing in a metronome/teacher. Don't give up! I'm sure you're being overly critical of your own playing.

Tap your foot, and play with music if you must. Don't give up, because you'll regret such an action. As everyone else said get a teacher.
