Ok guys, I know Sonic Youth are very experimental and it might be hard to track their sound, but until recently me and my band have been using the common rhytym guitar (playing common chord progressions) and lead guitar (play common scales) setup (along with bass and drums). We have experiment with different song structures, but still using commmon progressions/scales and standard tuning.

Just lately I've wanted to start writing in the style of Sonic Youth, circa Daydream Nation. I was wondering how Sonic Youth and similar art-rock bands make their music? I know Sonic Youth likes to use twin lead guitars, or twin guitars playing wierd chords. But what else? What are their influences and tricks to achieve their style. What's the basis of this type of music?

Any help would be appreciated.
Give me Leonard Cohen afterworld
So I can sigh eternally
