Hi!!! I'am just starting and I just cant tune. I have an electronic tuner( a cheap chinese one without any manual or whatsoever) and I cant figure out how to tune it. There is a little needle which fluctuates between the rannges of -440hz to <+450hz. Can some one please tell me how the strings should be tuned using this tuner and can i also tune an acoustic guitar with this sorta electronic tuner? Thanks for the help folks.

I've never heard of negative frequencies , but if you wanna tune standard it's A 440Hz ... I'll say neglect the (-ve) & (+ve) sign.

The strings are tuned as follows (in standard tuning) from Low to High : E A D g b e ... Capital & small letters refers that the small ones are of higher pitch.

About the electronic tuner ... You just said it has a needle , so I don't know wether it's an analogue or a digital one ...
But anyway , if it has a mic that catches the note acousticaly , then it can tune an acoustic easily , if it has to be connected by a cable to your guitar , then you'll need an acoustic cable (forgot it's name) to tune an acoustic .

Generaly , acoustic guitars are tuned by a tuning fork.

I'm not an acoustic freak myself , but most of the acoustic fellas I know tune with a Tuning Fork ... I don't know what's your point.

A pitch pipe might be good for your application, or if worst comes to worst throw into your boombox a CD of (for example) Master of Puppets and play Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - it has a good open E at the intro and then open tune your ride from there. Anything that you have in your collection that you know is where you want to be should work.

Damn straight!!!

Looking back, I think I tuned to my CD's almost exclusivly for quite some time - I now use the built-in tuner to my Boss GT6 for my electrics and a picth pipe (and the CD method from time to time) on my acoustic.

FYI - electrics: Ibanez RG470, Charvel/Jackson Strat

acoustic: Seagull S6

Speaking of tuning, how would one tune a string to C using an electric tuner which only indicates EADGBE? Should I just tune to B# or D flat? Thanks

There are many types of tuners ... But if I got it right , you can
tune with fretted notes .... i.e. if you wanna tune to D , the E note will be on the 2nd fret , and so on .

It's analogue.
A digital tuner would have some display screen that shows actual figures like 400 or whatever.
Those casio watches and so on are digital.A rolex is analogue.
It's in the meaning of the word,"digital".
We could get into this,if you're interested.

kingdavid , dude I surely know what's the difference between analogue & digital stuff ... I'm a student in the Faculty of Engineering , Electrical department.

The guy said he has an "electronic tuner with a needle" , by "electronic" I assumed it's digital , by needle it should be analogue ... That's why I asked cuz I was confused from his explaination , that's all.
