For a C chord, root position is CEG and the first inversion is EGC. If the notes are ordered ECG (in order of increasing pitch) instead (the C and G are switched but E is still on the bottom), is that also referred to as first inversion?

Thanks,

Dave

Hey Dave!

Yes, it's still first inversion. All that matters is that E is on the bottom in a C Major.

Same with second inversion. All that matters is that G is on the bottom in a C Major.

You do, however, start getting into the topic of Open Voicings and Closed Voicings at some point, when you start spreading the notes out a lot.
