Hello all,

New to guitar and been playing around 2 weeks. I'm working my way through GF1 I'm currently at 34%. I'm looking to practice more but in my mind I feel I am progressing to quickly. Would spending more time on melodies etc be the best way or just keep progressing through the lessons as I am? Trying to get this right to become the best player I can. Any information would be good!

It's a difficult one because it's easy to move through the lessons in fundamentals understanding the requirements of each lesson but not acquiring the level of skills needed to really go forward.

There is lot to be said for staying with a lesson while you practice the skills within that level . [br]It's also the case that you can read forward and even step forward if you accept your limitations and are incorporating the skills in some kind of practice sessions.

An ambiguous answer as only you can know if your learning or skimming .

You can go forward and return as you realise where any shortcomings show up.

The thing is not to get frustrated by how slow everything can be and stick with the lessons and practice. [br]I'm in the same place, covering GF1and 2 because I want to do the next levels but my basic skills just aren't there yet. [br]Dave

thanks for the reply I have stuck with the 6 string melodies at the moment just to get them down. But I am able to do them after say an hours practice. I'll stick with it and instead of progressing maybe just practice the lesson a little bit more.

I'd say it's a good idea to practice for a bit even if you think you nailed it down.[br][br]But it's also a good thing to move on. If you think that you can repeat the exercise a few times in a row without major mistakes then it's time to move on.[br][br]You can also add the short exercises as a warm up practice before each new practicing lesson, that way you make sure that you remember and still got it before moving on to your next lesson.[br][br]Wanting to play everything perfectly before moving is as bad as moving on too quickly because you never progress.[br][br]Those fundamentals lessons are what they are, fundamentals. So even if you have a couple spots where it's not perfect, remember that those are skills that you are going to practice throughout you whole musical journey.[br]Let's say that you know the chord and can transition between them but that transition is not as smooth as you'd like, then you should still move on in my opinion because if you don't, you might get stuck here for a long time and end up being discouraged.[br][br]As a beginner, you are going to make mistakes, that's inevitable.[br]It's like if you were trying to learn how to draw, you are not going to practice your first drawing until it's a masterpiece before moving to your next one.[br][br]It's a good thing to remember when learning anything really, don't wait for perfection before moving on or you will never learn anything.
