Just getting to the full chord videos and the teacher has you play the base note of the Em chord first. Is that normal? Are you not supposed to play all the strings at once? Is this just some sort of learning technique or is this really how it's supposed to be played.

There really wasn't any explanation other than......play the base note first, then strum the rest of the strings.

You can do that also.

It's both! Lisa is combining tasks for efficiency. Depending on the musical context (the requirements of the song, or your artistic choices) you will strum all the strings of a chord. Other times you will have to strum just a subset of the strings. Sometimes you will play the bass note, isolating one string, then rhythmically separate the other notes of the chord.

These are all normal techniques used in guitar learning and playing.

It's good to have a vareity of physical techniques in your skill set! Hope this helps. Keep practicing!
