Great question! This is a strumming pattern which you will see in a lot of songs. Essentially, you'll want to keep your arm moving up and down in a regular timing and rhythm, as the lesson states. But instead of hitting the strings each up and each down stroke with your arm, you'll omit some hits. We are referring to an eight-note rhythm. You would count an eight not rhythm as:

"one and two and three and four and."

The skipped strums would be counted like this:

"one ----- two and ------- and four -----."

The timing and the rhythm stays the same and your arm movement stays the same. Simply don't hit the strings on the 'skipped' beats. Hope this helps!
