Hi, sorry if this is covered elsewhere but I couldnt find a similar topic. I've been playing for about a year. I take lessons and am looking for this for structured supplementation. My question is where to start? In the beginner section or in the genre specific sections such as country or rock? The each seem to start with basic concepts and cords so I am just confused. For genre's I like rock and country as I have learned some Jimmy Buffet, John Denver, George Strait, CCR, Prince, so I like lot of diverse music.

Hi and welcome,

I don`t know what your level of expertise is at this point, but my opinion would be to start at the beginning in GF1 and then GF2 before branching out into the genre you like best. Much of it may just be review so you may sail right through but at least you`ll have the confidence knowing you haven`t missed anything and will have a solid foundation.

IMO, it's always best to start at the beginning.

Start with Fundamentals. If you already know the material and can play through the lessons... good on you... it'll take you a very short time to get through the basic courses. I suspect; however, that you will learn something and hone some chops in the process.

When you're finished, you can ask the question again about which genre.

Good luck, have fun.

EDIT: Can ya' tell I was typing my post while moosehockey18 was posting his?

Concur with the other two posters ahead of me.

[br]If it was me in your positiion, I'd start the Guitar Tricks journey with that big yellow START HERE button pointing at Fundamentals One. The first three chapters are totally Gumby, so you'll almost skip through early Fundamentals One, and should breeze most of Fundamentals One if not all, possibly.

Depending upon how you've been taking lessons prior to coming here, Fundamentals Two perhaps, perhaps not. Regardless, that you know you'll identify as soup and pick the meat you want to eat from it.

Once you're sure you've covered that material ascertaining no gaps in your knowledge or demonstrated ability, move on to whichever speciality stream you want to tackle first.

For me that was Rock.

Other than concurrently and progressively tackling music theory in pace with the lessons, I'm with the school of thought pick one, take proper aim, fire doing it thoroughly devoting maximum effort rather than the shotgun loaded with birdshot and hope you get lucky hitting something vital approach.

Same with guitar. Curiosity aroused, I was interested in looking at bass, but ultimately chose not to divide my time and attention until current objectives are met and significant proficiency with guitar attained.

Assemble overwhelming superiority of 'arms'. Superior training, morale and doctrine. Concentrate, never divide your forces. Schwerpunkt. Maximum application at the point of assault.

[br]I note your indicated join date but from your post context, it appears Full Access has only been recent decision? Welcome. All the best with continuation of your journey.

thanks very much, I will start in GF1 as you all have suggested. Appreciate the help and its probably for the best. I take lessons at guitar center and they have been over zoom since covid. My instructor teaches me songs basically and from there helps me with chords, so essentially asks me what songs I want to learn and then teaches them to me, teaches me new chords if I need to learn them for the song etc. Its good and keeps me going but I need more and something to push me further. I am still a beginner I probably know 10-12 chords and can play simple songs like Margaritaville, Changes in Latitude, Lodi, Brown eyed girl and some others. Hoping this helps me learn new chords and techniques and speed things up. I did guitar tricks before but never really started and just did the guitar center lessons. So today I decided to join guitar tricks for a year and try and push myself.
