in some metallica songs (fade to black, call of ktulu, sanitarium, ect.) they use a really very beutiful clean sound. does anyone have any idea how to duplicate this? is it the amp? the kind of wood in the guitar? the emg pickups? an effect? I know it's on an electric because I have videos of these songs live. if anyone knows how this may be done or how I can come close, please tell me.

It's an effect called "Chorus".

Check out Boss pedals.
Also every multi-effect unit include this effect.

On the album it's acoustic.

If you want to duplicate their clean sound, you need 2 things: EMG 81 pickups, and a Roland JC120 amp.

Only "fade to black" is acoustic on the album.

They use elec. guitars with chorus effect to get the clean tone for all the others, and also for "fade to black" live.

I don't know if they ever used a Roland JC-120 amp, but I played it before and it has a very sweet clean tone.

I do. ;)

I'm not sure if they used them during the last few years, but just have a good look at the "One" video. There are JC-120's on top of their 4X12's. :)

They use Triaxis preamps now.....hit the lottery lately ? Fake it with a clean tube amp and a BOSS CE-2 Chorus... Or I have a Korg AX1000G with the setting already built in :-)

I use a boss dd5 with 2 amps when you switch to the neck pickup clean and turn on the pedal i can get that sound almost exactly. but a chorus is really the cheepest way to get that sound.
