I have never failed to fail

Which comes first, music or lyrics? Personnaly I like doing music first then the lyrics. Just curious to hear some opinions. (Music is first music is defantly number 1, lyrics are second. Kurt Cobain)

don't forget that lyrics are what people remember (easier, at least), not your guitar solo.

Dudes,
I say do it either way, whichever comes more naturally.
If you have some killer lyrics come out of you write them down keep them around and if you happen to have some music to go with them put the thing together into a song.
Or you could write lyrics to a song you have written already.
I have done it both ways. Works either way. But best if you have a theme in mind for a song musically and lyrically ahead of time so you get the feeling right for both of them.

That's weird. When I was younger I always assumed that the lyrics to a tune were secondary to the music. I spent so many years purposely trying ignoring vocals so I could learn the guitar that now I don't even hear the vocalist anymore.
I wonder how many people pay really close attention to lyrics and judge how good a song is based on just that fact...as opposed to those of us who pay more attention to the music and think of the lyrics just as an added bonus if they're well written and actually make sense.

Well, I look at it this way, what's music without lyrics, still good music, a lot of the times. I listen to the music more, but I play a musical instrument. People who listen to the lyrics are probably vocalists or people who dont play or sing at all. Thats just what I've found anyway.

For me it's everything,the lyrics,the guitars,the other instrruments,everything.
You all know about moods and stuff, and lyrics definately carry a mood, just as the speed and key at which you play and so on do.
I'd like to come to regard my voicee like another instrument,a bit like playing the guitar and playing a harmonica at the same time or that sort of thing.
I listen to the vocalist.
The "lead" guitarist.
The "rhythm" guitarist.
Drummer.
The tambourines.
Everything.
These things are mutually connected.

Thats how a voice should be treated. But I dont listen to the lyrics, but I do listen to the sounds of the voice, and the vocal harmonies and all that.
Like you said, the voice is an instrument.

Well, For music to be music, music has to be combined. It is a joint effort.
But, For example, Van Halen. Their lyrics are the worse in all history, yet almost all the metal head guitarists dig them. I guess music can count a little more than music. Just don't have David Lee Roth as your vocalist/lyric writer.

I know some of their lyrics are a bit different, but who says they are the worst in all of history?

Well, I was exagerrating a little. But, they have no structure or meaning.
(excuse any spelling errors)

Lyrics dont need to have structure. Why do you think scatting is so cool? That has nothing to do with whats being said, just notes and stuff. Plus its different and interesting.

Look at the song "You Belong to Me" Dylan, and it happens to be coverd on the shrek soundtrack. It's a great song. The rythem is incredible (not hard, just sounds really great). But it has a disconnected feeling, really mellow, and sad, but exodic. Then look at the lyrics, very melodic, sorta sad, and exodic. Algiers. That's how good music should fit together. I would be intrested to see how that one was written.

Those are some sweet lyrics. I really like them. I wish I could write like that.
