I've been playing for years and like many others I've struggled to just sit down for a week and cram the fretboard notes into my brain. I've now hit the wall where I'm struggling to progress without having this basic knowledge.

After looking for shortcuts forever, I found this article to have the cleanest method for approaching this task and wanted to share it:[br][br]

The idea of starting with the FGAB on string 4 has finally opened this up to me. I inherently knew the notes on strings 5 & 6 (and therefore string 1) from playing Barre chords but the middle of the guitar was a hazy mystery. I could play the hell out of it but couldn't tell you what note I was on at any given time. This method fixed that for me in very short order. I hope this helps everyone.

Thank you for posting this! I've been trying to figure out how to accomplish this and also thought it would seep into my brain, but not so much.

I like it, Chris. Thanks for sharing that.

It takes as long as it takes unless you quit - then it takes forever and you will never get there.

Memorizing the fretboard can even be easier then that; one big block though is that people learn the bar chords with root on the 6th and 5th string ( which is great so far because you learn the notes on the 6th, 5th and 1st string already ) but most of the beginners skip the bar chords with root on the 4th string ( basically open D form with a bar 2 frets lower and very usefull for playing triads in funk and other styles ), learn them and then for the G string all the notes are the same as the A string but 2 frets lower and for the B string 2 frets higher then the A string, that's all there is to it.
