Trying to learn the ropes (or strings for that matter)--and dealing with the growing pains of getting the finger positioning perfect has been the challenge. I know I have to be patient to let my hands build up the strength. What is the recommended daily practice? I'm pretty sure the "tinny" sound is coming from not applying the right pressure on the strings, but the tips get sore pretty quickly at the very beginning and I don't know the balance between push through the discomfort to build up the strength and give yoruself a break to heal.

Hello ! We`ve all been there . Here`s a few things that can help:

1) Until the calluses form, which usually takes several weeks, limit practice time to about 1 hour per day. If if gets really uncomfortable, take a break for a day or two.

2) To help make the process easier, if you haven`t done so already, when your guitar shop is open, have the action (space between the strings and the frets) lowered and put the lightest guage of strings that the instrument will accomadate. That will make a big difference!

3) Finger and wrist strength will take time. Just practice consistently and it will come.

Good luck !

To add to Moose's good advice, I would suggest that you might want to break up your practicing into several short sessions instead of one longer session at first. That gives you some recovery time that can make a lot of difference.

Dave...

It takes as long as it takes unless you quit - then it takes forever and you will never get there.

It helped me when I first started playing.

Good luck!
